You remember when is the last time you freaked out, be it when that dog chased you or you were going to stuck by a fast car, your heart rate elevated, mind fully alert and you stunned for 3-4 seconds, trying to process what happened and your voice stumble. That time you worry!
Once you noticed you are safe, you will be relaxed and calm down. That’s the cycle of worry.
In this chapter, the author explains what happens to you
when you worry.
Many diseases are caused by worrying be it heart disease,
high blood pressure, arthritis, or stomach ulcers. Moreover, worry disturbs
your sleep cycle too which further worsens the problem. Sleep can only be
achieved by a relaxed mind.
The author explains how out of 176 business executives,
whose median age was 44.3 years, 1/3rd suffered from worry-related
diseases. They were probably trading life years for business success.
But why do we worry?
We all worry and it’s normal but if you try to worry about
every future uncertain event. You will be stressed out in no time. Worry not
only makes you sick mentally but it has dangerous effects on your physical
health too. As Dr. Alexis Carrel said, “Those who keep the peace of their inner
selves in midst of the tumult of the modern city are immune from nervous
diseases”.
But still, you are not convinced by the power of the calm
mind in a chaotic world, there was a lady named Olga K. Jarvey, she was suffering
from cancer and doctors declared it as uncurable. She was so frustrated by this
fact she called and shouted at the doctor, he insisted she faces her reality
and accepts the fact that she was dying.
Right then she was convinced there was no purpose in
worrying as she was going to die, she forced her to be happy, smiling all day
long, and forget to worry.
In that process, she was cured of cancer and lived a healthy
life.
